WeChat Pay is the second major mobile payment system in China, built directly into WeChat — the dominant social messaging app used by over a billion people. As of 2026, foreign visitors can link an international Visa or Mastercard to WeChat Pay without a Chinese bank account, making it a practical alternative or companion to Alipay for your trip.

WeChat vs Weixin

WeChat (the international version) and Weixin (微信, the Chinese version) are the same underlying platform but distributed as different apps. Use WeChat — available on the App Store and Google Play in countries outside China — because it supports foreign card linking. If you downloaded Weixin while inside China, it may lack the foreign card features available in the international version.

What You Need

Before getting started, have the following on hand:

  • A smartphone running iOS or Android with the WeChat app (international version) installed
  • An overseas mobile number to register your WeChat account
  • A Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card issued outside China
  • Your passport, in case identity verification is requested

Setting Up WeChat Pay

  1. 1
Install WeChat and create an account

Download WeChat from the App Store or Google Play. Register using your overseas mobile number — you will receive an SMS verification code. If you already have a WeChat account, skip ahead to step 3.

  2. 2
    Navigate to the Pay feature

In the app, tap 'Me' at the bottom-right corner of the screen, then tap 'Pay'. This opens your WeChat Pay wallet.

  3. 3
    Add your international card

Inside the Pay screen, tap 'Cards' then 'Add a Card'. Enter your Visa or Mastercard details: card number, expiry date, CVV, and your billing address.

  4. 4
    Verify your card

WeChat sends a one-time password to the phone number registered with your card issuer. Enter this OTP in the app to confirm the card link.

  5. 5
    Complete identity verification if prompted

Depending on your account status, WeChat may ask for additional identity verification. If prompted, upload a photo of your passport using the in-app camera and complete the facial recognition step.

  6. 6
    Make a payment

Your card is now linked. At any merchant displaying a WeChat Pay QR code, open WeChat, tap 'Pay', and either show your payment code for the merchant to scan or tap 'Scan' to scan theirs.

Transfer Limits

Foreign cards linked to WeChat Pay are subject to transaction and cumulative spending limits set by the People's Bank of China. In 2026 these limits are generally adequate for tourist spending — typical caps run around ¥6,000 per transaction and a cumulative annual limit in the range of USD 1,000 equivalent. The precise limits can change and are shown inside the app under Me → Pay → Wallet → Details.

Note that annual limits reset at the start of each calendar year.

Where WeChat Pay Works

WeChat Pay is accepted at a similarly broad range of merchants as Alipay:

  • Restaurants — from street-food stalls to shopping-mall food courts and formal restaurants
  • Convenience stores — FamilyMart, 7-Eleven, Lawson, and most domestic chains
  • Supermarkets — Walmart China, Carrefour China, Hema Fresh, local supermarkets
  • Transport — metro systems in major cities, Didi ride-hailing, intercity coaches
  • Entertainment and attractions — cinemas, tourist sites, museums, and theme parks
  • Retail — clothing stores, pharmacies, bookshops, and most shopping malls

Some smaller merchants, particularly older street-food vendors, accept only one of the two major payment systems. Having both Alipay and WeChat Pay active on your phone gives you maximum coverage across China.

Set Up Before You Arrive

Both WeChat Pay and Alipay are easier to configure while you have unrestricted internet access at home. Identity verification and card-binding OTPs may rely on international SMS delivery that can be slower or less reliable on a Chinese SIM card or when connected to a Chinese WiFi network.
