Overview
South China's landscape is dominated by the limestone karst formations of Guangxi province — a terrain sculpted over hundreds of millions of years into thousands of tower-shaped pinnacles, caves, underground rivers, and river gorges. The Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo passes through the heart of this karst world, and the journey — by boat, bicycle, or bamboo raft — ranks among the most visually stunning in Asia. The image of rounded green peaks rising above mist-covered water has appeared on the back of Chinese currency, in classical ink paintings, and in the dreams of travellers for centuries.
Beyond the karst, South China spans a vast subtropical coastline, the Pearl River Delta megacity cluster around Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and the mountainous interior of Guangdong and Fujian provinces. For most foreign visitors on a short visa-free trip, the Li River corridor — Guilin, Yangshuo, and the Longji rice terraces — provides the most concentrated scenic experience available in the region.
Best season: April–May (spring mist adds atmosphere to the karst) and October–November (clear skies, comfortable temperatures, green terraces). Summer (July–August) is peak tourist season with larger crowds on the river cruise boats. December–February is cool and quiet; some guesthouses close in Yangshuo in January.
Key Cities
Guilin serves as the gateway city for the Li River karst region. The city itself has a pleasant central lake district, the Reed Flute Cave, and Elephant Trunk Hill — the most-photographed natural landmark in Guangxi. Guilin Liangjiang International Airport has good connections to Beijing, Shanghai, and other major Chinese cities.
Suggested Duration
Minimum: 3 days (Li River cruise + Yangshuo)
Ideal: 5–7 days (Guilin 2 days + Li River cruise + Yangshuo 2 days + Longji terraces day trip)
7-Day Itinerary
- 1Day 1: Arrive Guilin
Check in to central Guilin. Evening: Two Rivers and Four Lakes night cruise — Guilin's city lakes and canals are illuminated at night, and the reflected karst peaks create an otherworldly atmosphere. Walk back along the lakeside promenade.
- 2Day 2: Guilin Highlights
Reed Flute Cave in the morning (45 minutes; the illuminated stalactites are spectacular, particularly the Crystal Palace cavern). Elephant Trunk Hill in the afternoon (the elephant-trunk rock arch spans the Li River; best photographed from the opposite bank). Evening at Zhengyang Pedestrian Street for Guilin rice noodles — the city's signature dish.
- 3Day 3: Li River Cruise to Yangshuo
Board the cruise boat at Zhujiang Wharf (30 minutes from Guilin by coach), departure around 09:00. The 83 km journey to Yangshuo takes 4–5 hours. The most dramatic scenery is between Xingping and Yangshuo — this stretch is depicted on the 20-yuan banknote. Arrive Yangshuo around 13:30; check in and explore West Street.
- 4Day 4: Yangshuo — Cycling the Yulong River
Rent a bicycle on West Street (¥30/day) and follow the Yulong River valley south. The 15-km route passes through rice paddies, past ancient stone bridges, and between traditional tile-roofed villages. A bamboo raft ride (¥150) can be arranged at several points along the river.
- 5Day 5: Yangshuo — Moon Hill + Caves
Morning hike to Moon Hill (8 km south of Yangshuo), a natural limestone arch with panoramic views over the surrounding karst. Afternoon: Blue Lotus Cave or Silver Cave — both feature illuminated cave systems with stalactite formations and underground rivers.
- 6Day 6: Longji Rice Terraces
Return to Guilin by bus (1.5 hours) then continue to Longsheng by coach (another 1.5 hours). The Longji terraces rise 880 m up the mountainside in concentric bands, built over 700 years by Zhuang and Yao ethnic minority communities. Hike to viewpoint Jinteng village. Overnight in a traditional wooden guesthouse inside the terrace village.
- 7Day 7: Return to Guilin and depart
Morning walk through the terraces at dawn when mist fills the valleys. Return to Guilin by noon; fly from Guilin Liangjiang Airport to your next destination.
